Styles of humor in communication

“If you can learn the humor of a people and really control it, you know that you are also in control of nearly everything else,” said Edward T. Hall, renowned anthropologist (1959/73: 52). These words sum up the importance of humor in communication and highlight the need of understanding the mechanisms responsible for humor production and perception. The aim of the presentation is to discuss the main psychological and linguistic theories dealing with relations between people and laughter. Four styles of humor and three attitudes connected with the disorders related to humor will be dealt with. The roles of stereotypes and culture specific values associated with laughter in different communities will be analyzed.
